For the last few weeks the Globsyn Business School students had a memorable time when top people from city’s corporate world came to the campus to interact with them. Corporates like Mr. Subir Chakraborty (General Manager – Indian Overseas Bank), Mr. Prabir Ghosh (CFO – McNally Bharat), Mr. Ashutosh Kumar (Zonal Head, East – Reliance Money), and Mr. Debraj S. Ray (HR – Dabur India) were seen discussing issues like – Sub Prime Crisis, Present Economic Scenario in India, Market Capitalization, Corporate Life, Commodity Trading in India etc. with the students. These sessions are helping the students to get an overview of the current economic & business scenario.

GBS students at Acumen 2008

Globsyn Business School students took part in the ‘Acumen – 2008’ – a prestigious b school competition held at IIM, Calcutta on 22nd November. Apart from GBS other premiere b schools like IIM Calcutta, XLRI, XIMB, IIFT – Kolkata, IIT Kharagpur etc. were also part of the event. Our students participated in the quiz and debate competitions and had a very good time with their competitors.

Dual Session by Top Corporates

Friday 21st November saw two big names of the industry, Mr. Dibyendu Bose (MD – TMILL) and Mr. P. K. Chatterjee (President HR – Duncans) coming to Globsyn campus and sharing their experiences with the students. The main focus of both the sessions was the present global economic problem and what could be the possible ways to solve them. Apart from that Mr. Chatterjee also described the prospect of HR in future, the pre requisites of a HR person. He argued that to become a successful HR person one must complete management education in HR. On the other hand Mr. Bose fully concentrated on the economic turmoil after giving a short introduction of his company. At the end of the sessions, the students put across their questions which were addressed by the two corporates.

Presentation Competition at Globsyn – Ahmedabad

Globsyn Business School – Ahmedabad recently organized a ‘Presentation Contest’ for its students. The theme of the presentation was ‘C K Prahlad’s Vision 2022’ which is the brainchild of our director Prof. R. C. Bhattacharya. The presentations compared relevant facts of today with the students’ vision for 2022 and how it could be achieved. The six groups were evaluated on the basis of approach to the subject and it brought out the best from the students.

High Profile Dinner

Recently when officials from ‘Glasgow University’ visited our campus, our director Prof. R. C. Bhattacharya hosted a dinner for them. Present in the event were Sir Kenneth Calman (Chancellor – Glasgow University) and Caroline Boddie (International Officer – Glasgow University), Mr.Kevin McCole, Director for UK Trade and Investment (British Deputy High Commission) & his wife. Prof. Bikramjit Sen was also present in the occasion.

On 18th November Dr. Richard O'Doherty (Associate Dean) and Ms. Kelly Robinson (Admissions & International Recruitment) of ‘University of the West of England’ visited the Globsyn Business School campus. Globsyn Placement 2009 Update

The ‘Corporate Relationship Program’ (CRP) of Globsyn Business School which culminates in completion of placements for all of students in reputed companies has started for the year 2009. After close to half a century the dream once seen by the Martin Luther King Jr. has finally come true. Democrat candidate Barak Obama will be the 44th president of USA. With this election Obama becomes the first African-American to hold the highest office of the nation.

In 1963 when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I have a Dream" speech, Obama was only a child.

In his speech, King said – "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."

The credit crunch is already reshaping lives and forcing people to plan new careers.

In both the U.S. and the U.K., the two big countries most affected by the financial-market turmoil, more and more people are signing up to do a master's in business administration.

The days when arts graduates made good money doing public relations for hedge funds are over. There won't be so many jobs for lightly qualified bankers or private-equity executives as there have been in the past five years.

The times are getting serious, and anyone who wants to prosper within a much tougher global economy will have to get serious as well.

A few years ago, it was possible to argue that the M.B.A., long regarded as the gold standard of business education, was in decline. The McLean, Virginia-based Graduate Management Admission Council tracks business schools around the world, monitoring the number of students applying for the course. By 2004, it was reporting a drop in applications to business schools.

Fast-forward to 2008, and that has turned around as bankers lose their jobs.

The Council in August reported that M.B.A. applications were rising at the fastest pace in history. According to the Application Trends Survey of full-time programs, 77 percent of business schools had an increased number of applications in 2008, the highest rate in five years. That compared with 64 percent a year earlier. Part-time and executive M.B.A. programs also had higher numbers. The survey covered 521 graduate management programs in the U.S., Europe and other parts of the world.

Globsyn Ahmedabad celebrated Durga Puja & Navaratri

The Globsyn Ahmedabad students coming from different religious and cultural backgrounds celebrated Durga Puja and Navaratri in the campus with great enthusiasm. The students of Karnavati Medical College also joined them in the celebrations. Apart from the traditional puja there were cultural programs which included ‘Garba’ – a local dance. The whole event saw two biggest festivals from the two different parts of India celebrated jointly and this can be an instance to the whole country for its cultural harmony.

She had an interactive session with the ‘International Business’ students and interviewed the interested students. Five students were finally selected for the prestigious Glasgow University program. Ms. Boddie also had a meeting with Globsyn Chairman, Director and the faculties.

GBS Students visit HINDALCO

The HR major students of Globsyn Business School along with their HOD Prof. D. P. Chattopadhyay visited Hindalco (An Aditya Birla Company), Belur works, as a part of their curriculum on Industrial Visit, recently.

The students met Mr. Rakesh Tiga (Head – HR), Mr. Santanu Chatterjee (Assistant Manager – HR), Dr. S. K. Sinha (Senior Manager – Medical Services) during the visit. Mr. Tiga interacted with the students in a one-to-one basis to address their queries. The students also had their lunch with the employees of Hindalco. This off- the-classroom learning added immense value to the students.

Globsyn conducted a two day training program for HSBC personnel at the International Towers on September 25th & 26th on ‘Leadership & Interpersonal Skills’. Prof. D. P. Chattopadhyay, Ms. Arpita Chowdhury and Mr. Pradip Ganguly conducted the sessions. There was interactive session, psychometric tests in different sessions. The participants enjoyed the sessions and the program was immensely successful.

Randolph Frederick ("Randy") Pausch (October 23, 1960 – July 25, 2008) was an American professor of computer science, human-computer interaction and design at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a best-selling author who achieved worldwide fame for his "The Last Lecture" speech on September 18, 2007 at Carnegie Mellon. In summer 2007, Pausch conceived the lecture after he learned that his previously known pancreatic cancer was terminal.

This joint program of Globsyn Business School and The University of Calcutta has got 30 students this year. Present in the induction program were Prof. R. C. This one year program will enable students to collect the right kind of data, analyze and interpret it to help the companies to serve their customers better. GBS Celebrates Teachers' Day

GBS students celebrated Teacher’s Day today, inside the campus, as mark of tribute to all the faculties. The students warmly welcomed all the faculties with red roses, after which there was a cultural program, where the students presented a wonderful song, a classical dance, a heartfelt message, a recitation and game shows. It was a delightful event, where the students gave in their best efforts to make the faculties feel special.

Tata Udyogporbo hosted an entrepreneurship workshop on Ideas and Opportunity Evaluation at Globsyn B-school campus on 30th August, 2008. Around 150 Young aspiring entrepreneurs were present. The workshop included sessions like Opportunity Evaluation, Entrepreneurs’ Talks and Mentoring Session. Bikram Dasgupta, CEO and Chairman - Globsyn Group, shared with the participants, the skills required to identify and evaluate business opportunities.

Skit Competition at GBS-A

On 14th August, a skit competition was organized in which students were divided into eight groups and were asked to present a skit on the theme ‘FREEDOM’. They were given 20 minutes to prepare, following which the presentation was to be made. The teams came up with lots of interesting themes for the skits. It included discussion of issues like dowry, caste system, provincialism, Indian Youth and their concept of freedom. It spoke of misuse of freedom and social evils like bribe and other forms of corruptions. The teams were judged on their message, overall coordination, presentation and use of humour. Two teams were awarded the first and second prize.

Independence Day at Ahmedabad Campus

Globsyn Business School – Ahmedabad, celebrated the 61st Independence Day with a great honor & pride with Staff, Faculty and Students of Karnavati School of Dentistry. The tri-color was hoisted by Mr. Ritesh Hada, after which the gathering sang the national anthem. A group of students from GBS sang some patriotic songs. Later sweets were distributed to all present.

Today we remember the hard work and dedication of all those who have toiled to build a free and modern India. And we re-dedicate ourselves to that cause. We remember our farmers, our workers and our teachers. We remember our soldiers - who defend our borders in snowy mountains, in deserts, in jungles, on the shores and in the oceans.

Brothers and Sisters,

Four years ago, on this day, I stood here before you and spoke to you about our Government’s new vision for a new India. I said to you that it is our desire to build an India that is just and humane; an India that treats all its citizens as equals;

GBS Contributes to Flood Relief

Our Rotaract Club along with the students of Globsyn Business School & employees of Globsyn Technologies, joins hand with Ramakrishna Mission for the relief of flood affected people of East and West Midnapore districts of West Bengal. Altogether a sum of Rs. 3780, 254 clothes and basic necessity medicines were handed over to Swami Nityasatyananda for distribution. After this project we are very eager to work with Ramakrishna Mission in future.

On 3rd August 2008 RC Calcutta Metropolitan South (Globsyn Business School) co-hosted the 1st District Assembly of the RID 3291. Around 150 Rotaractors from different clubs of the district took part in the daylong event. There were different sessions for Presidents, Secretaries and members taken by senior Rotarians & Rotaractors. Past District Governor Rtn. Amitava Mukherjee took a session on ‘Leadership’. The whole program was held in Globsyn Business School campus.

GBS responds to Bangalore & Ahmedabad Bomb Blasts

Around 140 students of Globsyn Business School Ahmedabad along with 400 students of Karnavati Dental College organized 'Silent Prayer' on Sunday 27th July, 2008 after the shocking Bangalore and Ahmedabad serial bomb blast. All of these students are from different parts of India and share different background. But in spite of that they came together and showed solidarity against terrorism. Their silent prayer has sent a clear signal to all the wrong doers that India remains united to counter their ill intentions.

The Leader of Opposition, Shri L. K. Advani has chosen to use all manner of abusive objectives to describe my performance. He has described me as the weakest Prime Minister, a nikamma PM, and of having devalued the office of PM. To fulfill his ambitions, he has made at least three attempts to topple our government. But on each occasion his astrologers have misled him. This pattern, I am sure, will be repeated today. At his ripe old age, I do not expect Shri Advani to change his thinking. But for his sake and India’s sake, I urge him at least to change his astrologers so that he gets more accurate predictions of things to come.

As for Shri Advani’s various charges, I do not wish to waste the time of the House in rebutting them. All I can say is that before leveling charges of incompetence on others, Shri Advani should do some introspection. Can our nation forgive a Home Minister who slept when the terrorists were knocking at the doors of our Parliament? Can our nation forgive a person who single handedly provided the inspiration for the destruction of the Babri Masjid with all the terrible consequences that followed? To atone for his sins, he suddenly decided to visit Pakistan and there he discovered new virtues in Mr. Jinnah. Alas, his own party and his mentors in the RSS disowned him on this issue. Can our nation approve the conduct of a Home Minister who was sleeping while Gujarat was burning leading to the loss of thousands of innocent lives? Our friends in the Left Front should ponder over the company they are forced to keep because of miscalculations by their General Secretary.

Cricket Match at GBS - A

On Saturday, we had three Cricket Matches - Girls of Sec A vs Girls of Sec B, and two matches between the boys of Sec A & Sec B - the finals of the boys match will be held on the coming Saturday. Mr B K Bhattacharya and Mr Param Shah were also there. The boys helped to coach the girls teams and the girls came out into the lawn early to learn from them. 80% of the girls had never played cricket before. The kids cheered all the teams, irrespective of the Sections they belonged to. After the match, all the girls were so happy and the glow on their faces cannot be expressed in words.

We had a party to celebrate the Cricket Match - in the Girls Hostel last night with everyone contributing for the eats and we danced till midnight. Before we started the celebrations, I asked them what were the learnings they had from the match. Here is what they shared with me:

This match has:

• developed team spirit
• shown them that they can do unknown things
• showcased their talents
• made them believe in themselves
• unearthed leadership qualities
• made them closer to each other
• taught them not to blame anyone - but to work as a team
• taught them that to learn anything new, they have to put the effort into it
• taught them time management
• taught them that they have to motivate themselves and others
• shown them that they can achieve anything together
• made them more disciplined
• taught them to stretch themselves towards a common goal
• shown them that dedication works
• proved that participation is as important as winning
• shown that they have a healthy competitive spirit

The first batch of GBS Ahmedabad - is simply fantastic! Very receptive - they are displaying a seeking spirit and are showing high levels of adaptability.

We had an Antakshari session last evening on the sprawling, green lawns - girls vs boys - both were winners! Solos were sung by both the groups and the energy displayed by the participants was awesome! They enjoyed the ice breaking session. Three cheers for the wonderful batch! Keep the GBS flag flying high!

The students had arranged for a birthday cake for Ruchi's birthday! It surely was a birthday to remember!

GBS Rotaract Sweeps Zonal Awards

Globsyn’s Rotaract Club (Rotaract Club of Calcutta Metropolitan South) bagged 5 prestigious awards in the Annual Zonal awards night held on 22nd June 2008 at Rotary Sadan, Kolkata. Encouraged as the CSR initiative of the Globsyn Group the club was declared as the ‘Best Club in Club Service’. Its president Rtr. Indrani Banerjee (Kar) won the ‘Best President – Overall’, while Club Reporter Rtr. Arunava Das won the ‘Best Reporting’ award. The club also bagged two of the five best project awards for its projects – ‘A Match to Remember’ – a football tournament organized at Calcutta Deaf and Dumb School for its students (Community Service), and ‘Membership Development Drive’ – a presentation given to 200 odd students of Globsyn Business School about the Rotaract movement (Club Service). All the club members as well as the Globsyn management are satisfied and they look forward to win many such awards.

GBS Celebrates Ahmedabad Campus Inauguration

Globsyn Business School launched its new campus in Ahmedabad on 24th June, 2008 (last Tuesday). Present at the induction programme of PGDM 1 batch was Mr. Bikram Dasgupta – Chairman & CEO, Globsyn Group, Prof. R.C. Bhattacharya – Director, Globsyn Business School, Deans and H.O.D.s. The inauguration started with the Lighting of the Lamp by Mr. Dasgupta, followed by students’ address by Prof. R.C. Bhattacharya, Deans and all H.O.D.s. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Dasgupta’s message to the new batch was – “Be an individual; learn to identify yourself.” He further added that focusing on oneself is very important and one should always aspire to have a better tomorrow. A special mention goes to the Karnavati Trust Members, without whose support, Globsyn Business School Ahmedabad wouldn’t have been a success.

The induction programme of the PGDM 7 batch and PGDIB 2 batch went off remarkably well on 17th and 18th June, 2008 respectively. Prof. R.C. Bhattacharya – Director, GBS inaugurated the induction with his welcome address. The Lighting of the Lamp was done by Mr. Bikram Dasgupta - Chairman & CEO, Globsyn Group. Thereafter, the H.O.Ds addressed the students; Prof. J.N. Mukhopadhay – Dean, Faculty Development spoke of building long-lasting relationships with fellow batch-mates and Prof. Tridibesh Bandopadhay – Dean, Academic Affairs encouraged self-confidence. Coordinator PGDIB - Prof. Bikramjit Sen’s mantra was to do well in life while Prof. Biswajit Chakraborty – Registrar thought overcoming fear is essential. Finally, Mr. Dasgupta addressed the students and shared his thought - education is free; blogs are the future of education and also that skill is the requirement of new age. Mr. Dasgupta also emphasized on the fact that everyone must have aspiration to excel in life and fear and guilt are the two factors that every student should immediately do away with.

Since GBS has collaboration with Glasgow University for its PGDIB (Post Graduate Diploma in International Business) programme, various people from Glasgow visited us from time to time like, Dr. Angus Laing, Dr. David Boddie, Dr. Shameen Prashantham. As part of the continuing relationship Ms. Caroline Boddie (International Coordinator) and Mr. Jim Campbell (International Placement Coordinator) visited GBS on June 15, 2008. They also met up with our Placement Officer and Director.

Globsyn Rotaract Joins Hand for International Understanding

The Rotaract Club of Globsyn Business School (RC Calcutta Metropolitan South) joined hands with the Rotaract Club of St. Augustine (Trinidad & Tobago) to take part in a ‘Currency Exchange’ program. This unique program helped the club members to learn about the respective cultures, and encouraged international collaboration for doing future projects.

RC Calcutta Metropolitan South, sent the heritage details and significance of its currency symbol to Rotaract Club of St. Augustine . Rtr. Vashti (Director, International Service – Rotaract Club of St. Augustine) reciprocated by doing the same with the "Trinidad & Tobago Dollar".

This exchange program helped the club to learn about the history of Trinidad and Tobago. One of the interesting learnings included the rediscovery of the island by Christopher Columbus in 1498.

DRCC Rtn. Subhojit Roy, congratulated RC Calcutta Metropolitan South and said that this project was one of the most interesting international projects in Rotract that he had come across.

The Rotaract Club at Globsyn Business School is now looking forward to doing more such international Projects.

GBS Ahmedabad - Campus Update

Final preparations for the GBS Ahmedabad campus are on full swing. The Academic block is ready for the show. With a dedicated VSAT, the entire campus is being covered with high speed wireless internet. A full time telephone exchange will allocate individual landline number to all students.

We are also on the process of finalizing an Education ERP tool that will assist Globsyn to maximize its academic throughput. Study materials that students will get during first term are being sourced from most renowned publication houses.

The entire campus is abuzz with activities 24x7 to prepare the best possible academic environment for the incoming batch.

Amongst other things, this email service will give our students over 6 GB of storage space, peer to peer chatting facility, easy to use interface and large email attachment sizes. Dr. Khandwalla joins as the Chairman of GBS Ahmedabad Academic Council

We, at Globsyn Business School are highly privileged and honoured to have Dr. Pradip Khandwalla as the Chariman of our Academic Council at GBS - Ahmedabad.

In the past, Dr. Khandwalla has served as the Director of IIM (A). He has also been an Independent Non Executive Director of Gujarat Gas Co. Ltd and Micro Inks Ltd since March 2001.

His research and teaching contributions have been in organisational theory, design & restructuring of organisations for management of excellence, innovative turnaround management, effective management of public enterprises and governmental organisations.

Dr. Khandwalla holds a MBA from Wharton Business School, and a Ph.D. from Carnegie-Mellon, USA.

Harvard visits GBS

On 16th May, Mr. Lynton R Hayes, the Executive Director of Harvard Business School, visited the Globsyn Business School Campus. Amongst other things, Mr. Hayes met up with our senior faculty members, to share with them, the History of Harvard Business School. He also gave our faculty members his perspective on how Harvard Business School has successfully carried forward their executive education programs for more than 50 years.

My First Week at ISPAT Industries Limited

After completing my first year in Globsyn Business School, I joined ISPAT Industries Limited, on 22nd April, for doing my Summer Internship Programme (SIP) in Finance. My project topic is Working Capital Management. I was both nervous and excited before joining the Company, since I did not have any prior experience of the corporate world.

My first day at office would always be a special one for me, because that day itself I realized the importance of Globsyn Business School, at every step. Gradually I began understanding the office environment and its culture and felt at home within a short span of time. I still remember my nervousness when I met my boss. And after he explained the project topic to me, I realized that my boss, is a very knowledgeable person, and with every passing day I am getting to learn something new from him.

Globsyn Business School has played a very significant role in making me what I am today and every time I learn something new at office, I remember my days at GBS (especially HR and Finance classes). My boss is more like a mentor than a project guide to me and it’s needless to say that, what I am getting from ISPAT is absolutely priceless.

TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR SOFT SKILLS

The first question you should ask yourself is – how much do you love yourself? If you do, you must know your own strengths and shortcomings and should constantly be working towards your own improvement.

Soft skills are better known as Work Skills or Life Skills. Without these skills in place, you would not be able to express or demonstrate your other skills effectively – to get you the place you rightfully deserve in the corporate world.

Work Skills encompasses a whole gamut of areas. Some of the more important ones are:

The good news is that you can pick up work skills. The challenge lies in identifying where you are strong and where you need to brush up.

Communication is not simply fluency in a particular language. It is not just being able to speak well enough to get your message understood by the person you are addressing the message to. You need to be articulate enough when speaking. Listening is a skill that plays a very important role in communication. Most of us are impatient to get a word in; while the other person is still speaking. To understand what someone is saying, one has to listen – not just hear!

To be able to get along with others is a skill that is critical in the Corporate world. If you have a problem with this; you should hone up your interpersonal skills – by talking to as many people as possible – even if it creates a sense of discomfort in you. Unless people like you, trust you and accept you, it will be difficult for you to get your message across. Creating a rapport with others is very critical in the Corporate world.

Not a day should pass by without your having moved forward with your own personal development. It is an ongoing process and you have to be very disciplined and aware of what your own shortcomings are before you can even get down to working on them.

Training at Mumbai (Reliance Money)

After graduating from GBS, I joined Reliance Money. My first day was scheduled at the Reliance Money office in Mumbai, where I along with my new colleagues went through a series of training on different financial products, mostly to do with Equity Market, Share Market and the Commodity Market.
My journey to Mumbai was a memorable one. Nineteen others from GBS including (Amit Mukherjee, Susovan Saha, Avishek Saha, Ritendra Nath Mukherjee, Arindam Ghosh, Sudipta Mitra, Barnini Sengupta, Avishek Mukherjee, Piyasha Ganguly, Pushpita Maitra, Sweta Singh, Vinayak Mitra, Richa Khemka, Rajdeep Baran Das, Sourav Mitra, Sudipto Chatterjee, Sukalpo Sarkar, Poulami Dutta) were part of the same trip.

We reached the Business Capital in the early hours of the 7th (April). Our training started on the very same day and by the end of our first session we were all very Tired. The next few days were very hectic, but at every step it reminded us of the things we learnt at GBS (specially in JNM Sir’s classes).

Despite our busy schedule, some of us found time to visit a few tourist spots in Mumbai. Places like Gateway of India, Nariman Point, Juhu Beach, Marine Drive, Haji Ali, Siddhi Vinayak Temple are example of a few that we visited.

I am attaching a picture of some of the GBS students from the trip, hope you like it!

All in all it was trip that I will cherish in years to come.

Best Ways to Utilize Your Time before Joining any B-school….

Dear Students,

You have around two months of time in hand before your academic-session goes on-stream.
Time being the only resource which is irretrievable and once lost cannot be regained, it behoves on all of us to utilize this resource effectively.

Here are some worthwhile guidelines to this effect:
1) Read “Economic Times” daily.
2) Read “Indian Management” (monthly journal, available in all leading newspaper stalls).
3) Pick up any general knowledge book (of the sort: Limca Book of Records, Hindustan Year Book etc.) & peruse same.
4) Visit libraries (e.g., BCL, USIS, R. K. Mission Goal Park, National Library, State Library etc.,) to study management books/journals.
5) Surf the following sites & gainfully subscribe, to avail of/receive journals of each of these bodies which will update you on current trends in management:

My First Week At Work…

A business school graduate, believing himself to be an exclusive breed of specially trained professional, exuding an air of exclusivity and superior knowledge, is often faced with a paradox. He is the object of spite and is sneered at by skeptics and cynics (especially non-MBA people) for being too didactic – for being too hung up on theory. ‘Theory does not prepare you for real life’, they say! ‘Manager are born and not made – experience begets competence, not trimesters’! Well, I beg to differ!

Although I must confess that my first day at office was a trifle unnerving. I suddenly found myself in an alien environment and couldn’t make sense of anything. I despaired. I panicked. All I wanted to do was to get out of that place which seemed to be mocking my ignorance. I even thought I saw contempt in the peon’s eyes.

Probably I was imagining things. I had to calm down. I was a premier B-school graduate after all. Wait! Did I just hear a familiar refrain? Hey, someone out there is talking supply chain and logistics. Comprehension dawned. I know all about that! One term and a full credit paper! I could tell them a thing or two about supply chain. I felt elated! Suddenly I saw my B-school in an entirely different light. No longer was it just a passport to the corporate world. It had actually equipped me to survive in this world as well. Somewhere it had brought about a transformation without me being aware of the process. I had made the transition. I was suddenly at peace with myself. It may be that experience cannot be substituted, but it doesn’t hurt to have a head start either – right?

Farewell Party @ GBS

The farewell party of the 2nd year students on 31st March was rocking. The function started at around 6.30 p.m., with a welcome speech by the Director - Prof. R.C. Bhattacharya; after which the H.O.Ds. shared their feelings and views about the departing batch. Mr. Bikram Dasgupta, Chairman & CEO of Globsyn Group was also present. The 1st year students performed with great fanfare and enthusiasm and gave out chocolates along with beautiful farewell messages as mementos. There were also awards like Mr. & Ms. GBS, Mr. & Ms. Fair & Lovely, Mr. & Ms. Techie, Mr. & Ms. Best Dressed and more. A unique performance by the GBS band coupled with sumptuous dinner perked up the evening. Finally as the DJ nite started, the students simply burned the dance floor! It was a lively and memorable evening… needless to say we will miss the graduating PGDM students very much.

Today, 4th April, Globsyn Business School has added a new page in its social service charter. It has organized a blood donation camp in its own campus through its CSR wing "The Rotaract Club Of Calcutta Metropolitan South" which is run by GBS Students. The students ensured all arrangements were in place including pre-health check-ups, refreshments for the donor, medical sterility processes. The programme was inaugurated by the Director – GBS, Prof.R.C.Bhattacharya. The response was overwhelming overshooting the targeted collection of 50 units of blood. GBS Hosts Union Budget Analysis 2008

March 9th, 2008 was an extraordinary day for us. GBS organized a discussion on the latest Union Budget at Calcutta Club, wherein Mr. Bishwajit Bhattacharyya, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court, was invited to share his views. The budget by then had been discussed at various forums, but Mr. Bhattacharyya touched upon some of the less debated topics which made the discussion far more interesting.

Some of the topics which were discussed at length were:

Ø Fiscal deficit of our country

Ø Government of India's debt servicing load

Ø Lack of real insightful budget analysis and interpretation

Ø Lack of funds to develop the legal system

Amongst others some of the eminent personalities like Mr. Aloke Mookerjea, Chairman, Flakt India Limited, Mr. Partho Chatterjee, Executive VP-Finance, ITC Limited, Mr. Sandipan Chakravortty, Managing Director, Tata Ryerson, Ms. Kusum Satapathy, Commissioner, Central Excise, Mr. Raj K Johri, Addt. Director General of Police, Dr. Abhijit Sen, Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in Calcutta, were also present that day.

Needless to say it was an enlightening experience for us at GBS.

QAA Team visits GBS

Of the most recent events that took place at GBS, the visit of the Quality Assurance Agency or QAA (http://www.qaa.ac.uk/) on 11th-12th of March’08 is truly worth sharing. The QAA Panel Members comprised of the Chair of the Panel: Mr. Pat Noon, Associate Head of Design and Visual Arts from Coventry School of Art & Design: Mrs. Kollette Super, Acting Director & Professor of Strategic Management from Kent Business School: Prof. Paul Phillips, Senior Registry Officer, Quality Enhancement Unit (Secretary to the Panel): Ms. Alison Dyton and Associate Dean: Dr. Don Finlay.

The first day commenced with the QAA team’s tour of GBS followed by a brief presentation by Prof. R.C. Bhattacharya, after which the QAA Panel Members met with our students to know about their experiences and views. It was a unique experience for the students and for us. In the evening the QAA Panel Members attended a reception at Calcutta Club, where, along with our Senior Management Team, Alumni students and three of our students who were in Coventry University last year were also present. Day two initiated with meetings and rolled along with discussions on various subjects.

The two-day-visit of the QAA team, honestly speaking, was an exceptionally ingenious experience for all of us at GBS.
