March 9th, 2008 was an extraordinary day for us. GBS organized a discussion on the latest Union Budget at Calcutta Club, wherein Mr. Bishwajit Bhattacharyya, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court, was invited to share his views. The budget by then had been discussed at various forums, but Mr. Bhattacharyya touched upon some of the less debated topics which made the discussion far more interesting.
Some of the topics which were discussed at length were:
Ø Fiscal deficit of our country
Ø Government of India's debt servicing load
Ø Lack of real insightful budget analysis and interpretation
Ø Lack of funds to develop the legal system
Amongst others some of the eminent personalities like Mr. Aloke Mookerjea, Chairman, Flakt India Limited, Mr. Partho Chatterjee, Executive VP-Finance, ITC Limited, Mr. Sandipan Chakravortty, Managing Director, Tata Ryerson, Ms. Kusum Satapathy, Commissioner, Central Excise, Mr. Raj K Johri, Addt. Director General of Police, Dr. Abhijit Sen, Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in Calcutta, were also present that day.
Needless to say it was an enlightening experience for us at GBS.
We now look forward to hosting next year’s Union Budget!
