National and International recruiters in Globsyn campus

The term in not yet over, the placement season has just begun and more than half of the final year GBS students have been placed across a cross section of industries and states. The mood is upbeat as the campus has seen new MNCs along with the returning brands at the onset of the recruitment season itself.

The leading recruiters this year are Deloitte Consulting, ITC Ltd, TATA Tinplate, HCL Infosystems, mJunction Limited, Eveready Industries, CITI Bank, AXIS Bank, IVIZ Technosolutions Ltd, ICICI Securities, Kotak Securities, Naukri, Modicare Limited among others.

According to Bikram Dasgupta, Chairman and CEO, Globsyn Group, “After almost a lull of two years this year promises to be a good year on the hiring front. What is more promising is that organizations from almost all sectors are participating in the recruitment process, which not only augurs well for the economy, but also brings into sharp focus B-Schools that are able to demonstrate differentiable value. Now, it is the turn of the students, to take advantage of this differentiation which Globsyn brings to the table, in quality organizations”.

The upward trend in recruitment has seen a cross section of industries starting from old economy sector organizations to international consulting companies actively participating in the campus selection process. The initial trend has seen a more of Consulting, FMCG, and IT firms being the forerunners in the race to pick up management graduates closely followed by the BFSI sector.

Globsyn Students Celebrate 'Serendipity'

The Convocation ceremony for the 7th Batch of management graduates was held as part of the opening ceremony of ‘Serendipity’ - the annual cultural extravaganza organized by students. Held on 19th February 2011 at EZCC, Salt Lake, the annual event was organized as part of the series of ‘live projects’ that students undertake during their two year journey at GBS, and forms an integral part of the mentoring process that prepares students for high growth management careers. ‘Serendipity’ not only provides students with an invaluable opportunity to apply their management learning, in real time, while planning, financing, marketing, and managing the whole project, but also to showcase their multi-faceted skills.

Inaugurated by Mr. R. Gopalakrishnan – Executive Director of Tata Sons, the Chief Guest for this year’s ‘Serendipity’, the Convocation program saw 219 PGPM, PGP-International Business, and Executive-PGPM students being felicitated by Mr. Bikram Dasgupta – Chairman, Governing Council, Globsyn Business School.

Delivering his convocation speech Mr. R. Gopalakrishnan said – “Any institute provides you one ‘I’ in the form of ‘instruction’. What you need in your professional life is another ‘I’ for ‘intuition’ and a third ‘I’ for ‘inspiration’.” He advised the students to get immersed in their work – “Immersion means experiencing emotions and involvement so deeply that the lessons enter your brain’s remote memory. When needed, these lessons pop up on your mental screen without your trying. Achieving total immersion is a key step in the management of your energy and the development of intuition. Travelling, talking to customers, staying rooted mentally and emotionally, are all ways of doing so.” Talking about the weaknesses of a person, Mr. Gopalakrishnan commented – “As you develop your career, you will realize that you are prone to some weaknesses that are uniquely personal to you e.g. short temper, arrogance, garrulousness, insensitivity and so on. These are called de-railers. It is very difficult to completely remove such weaknesses, but you can push yourself to a heightened awareness of your de-railers. In this way, you can reduce their damage potential.

Presenting the ‘Annual Report’ of the school Prof. Pratip Kar (Director, Globsyn Business School) touched upon the new initiatives undertaken by the school including launching of a fully validated program – MBM (Master of Business Management) - with Coventry University, UK. He also highlighted the fact that, given its strong technology backbone, the school has won the National Award for ‘Best B-School using Technology in Training/Education’ for the second year in row. This time the honour was conferred by Star News – the leading news channel.

The afternoon session of ‘Serendipity 2011’ saw the cultural program where the students of Globsyn Business School gave a scintillating performance with a wide repertoire consisting of singing, dancing, music coupled with a live fashion show!

The invitees for this event included parents, faculty member and their family, and alumnis.

A Different Diwali @ Globsyn

Deepavali or Diwali as we fondly call is celebrated all over India as the festival of light, the triumph of good over evil. It is not just another ritual but a tradition that teaches us the importance of sharing, that happiness shared among all increases happiness, that light can only penetrate the dark if we can spread light all around us.

To spread this happiness, on the eve of Diwali, the members of Rotaract Club of Calcutta Metro South (Globsyn Business School) organized a little celebration with those people who are a part of our lives but we rarely acknowledge their contribution. All the house-keeping and support staffs working in Globsyn Business School and Globsyn Technologies, the laborers working in the adjacent construction site and the little boys working in the ‘jhups’ in and around Salt Lake, Sector V were invited to celebrate Diwali with the Rotaractors. Crackers and sweets were distributed among all. Small games like Rangoli making, for the women and among the men a competition to eat max amount of sweets in a minute were also organized.

It was a very small and humble effort from the students of Globsyn Business School to bring smile on the these faces but in return they received a feeling of immense satisfaction and the blessings of a old man who found a family away from his family.

Coventry Faculty Teaches Strategic Management to Globsyn Students

The interaction with Prof. Paul Jackson (Head of the Department, Strategy and Applied Management) - Coventry University, UK during his visit at Globsyn Business School was quite a unique one. Our initial reservation before interacting with such a personality was taken care by his friendly behavior on the very first day. During his classes on ‘Strategic Management’ he engaged us in various activities which helped us to relate with the topic and develop our analytical skills. The practical examples shared by Prof. Jackson from his experience really helped us in understanding the subject from its core. His enthusiasm and energy has also helped us in motivating ourselves to go the extra mile while solving the exercises given by him. Altogether the experience of interacting with a global faculty like him was extremely good and we are thankful to Globsyn for providing us such an opportunity. We are looking forward to meet more of such international faculty in future during our course in Globsyn Business School.

Globsyn Pays Tribute to CK Prahalad

In economic terms ‘Bottom of the Pyramid’ means the largest and the poorest economic group in society. Earlier this strata of society was ignore by most of the big companies as they felt that this section was not capable of generating enough revenue for them. the person who has forced these companies to review their strategy of ignoring the ‘Bottom of the Pyramid’ is Prof. C. K. Prahalad, who in his book ‘The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid’ showed the world how new business opportunitites could be found among billions of poor people of the society which will not only help companies to generate profits but will also help in eradicating poverty.

This along with other notable contributions of Prof. Prahalad, like – ‘The Future of Competition – Co-Creating Unique Value with Customers’, ‘The New Age of Innovation’, ‘Weak Signal versus Strong Signal’, ‘Competing for the Future’, and ‘The Dominant Logic’ etc. were discussed in the event organized by Globsyn Business School to pay tribute to the great thinker in the field of management science. The participants deliberated on the core issues of each of the topics with examples and live case studies taken from different companies like Nokia, Blackberry, Microsoft, Arvind Eye Care, Sony etc. At the end of the session the participants raised some thought provoking questions for the audience:
  • Can the ‘Bottom of the Pyramid’ model be applied to the Education Industry? If not, what can be a good business model for reaching education to the bottom of the pyramid in a profitable mode instead of a CSR initiative?
  • Can we really use the idea of co-creation widely so that all the consumers can be incorporated for better value creation or is it something just meant for a handful of consumers?
