As a part of Globsyn Business School’s (GBS) student exchange program with the prestigious AB Freeman School of Business (Tulane University, USA), around twenty students of the ‘Executive MBA’ (ITAM) program of the university came down to Kolkata for their ‘Global Module’ curriculum.
The module started with a special session by Prof. Pratip Kar (Director, Globsyn Business School) who addressed the students on the topic ‘Setting Up New Ventures in India by Foreign Entrepreneurs’. The talk provided valuable insights regarding social, cultural as well as cross cultural and demographic challenges of working in India. The most interesting part of the whole module was a joint session between Globsyn Business School students and Tulane University students where they together solved a case study on McDonald’s. During this exercise the students were divided into different groups comprising both GBS and Tulane students and then those groups worked out solutions of the problems mentioned in the case study. This whole program helped GBS students to interact with the Tulane students and learn from their experience.

Dr. Angelo DeNisi's (Dean - A. B. Freeman School of Business, Tulane University) Message
Dr. Venkat Subramaniam (Exxon Professor of Finance - A. B. Freeman School of Business, Tulane University) while launching the program along with Prof. R. C. Bhattacharya (Director, Globsyn Business School) and Mr. Romit Dasgupta (Director, Globsyn Group) gave details of the program and also conveyed that being the intellectual capital of India, ‘Kolkata’ is the perfect place to start the program. Ms. Maria Lee (Director, Professional Education – A. B. Freeman School of Business, Tulane University) shared the detail profile of the faculties who will be travelling to Globsyn Business School to teach in this program. Dr. Angelo DeNisi (Dean - A. B. Freeman School of Business, Tulane University) in his video message said – “India without a doubt is the largest supplier of technically trained manpower in the world and we think this is an important place to be for the future, but we needed to find the right partner and I think in Globsyn we found the right partner.”
In the Industry Interaction meet held after the launch, the corporates were seen very excited about the program and they appreciated Globsyn's effort in starting such a kind of a program which will provide the industry the finance professionals with global outlook.
If the late 2001 saw the bankruptcy of Enron and its accounting partner Arthur Anderson, 2008 has seen a much more catastrophic financial tsunami hit the shores of all most all nations leading to severe recessionary pressures, a scale some would say is much worse than the great depression of 1929 to hit America and subsequently the rest of the world.
This latest financial crisis to hit the world economy has been man-made and largely due to:
Short-sightedness of policy makers, specifically in the US.
Creation of a gigantic real estate bubble, and
Unbridled greed among financial institutions that led to creation of exotic derivatives, of which Warren Buffet, the Sage of Omaha, said in 2003, where he compared complex derivative contracts to hell, "Easy to enter and almost impossible to exit”.
As with the Great Depression of 1929, we can expect to see fundamental changes in how financial institutions work, a slew of policy decisions and putting in place stricter regulations to protect investor wealth, particularly those who have seen their life-time savings/pensions being nearly wiped off. If the Sarbanes-Oxley Act was the result of the Enron fiasco, expect to see more such regulations enacted across global economies to regulate and control creation and trade of financial instruments.
As we recover from this financial mess, there will emerge a need for more astute financial professionals, who are not only more prudent but have demonstrable commitment towards investors who vest their faith (and money) on them.
It is in this backdrop that Globsyn Business School is shortly planning to launch a top-of-the-line International Finance Program in collaboration with the Freeman School of Business, Tulane University, whose ‘Finance’ program has been rated among the top 10 in the world, by the Financial Times. A uniquely designed one-year program, students will be tutored by faculty from Tulane University, who shall be travelling to GBS in addition to travelling to the Tulane Campus in the US to be exposed to a ‘live’ simulated trading floor.
Keep watching this space for more details on the program.
One of the highlights in the Globsyn-Tulane(Freeman School) program is the Trading course at Tulane's Simulated "Live Trading Center" (New Orleans) . Tulane's AB Freeman School of Business is also known for the Burkenroad reports. Hear more about the trading course and the Burkenroad Reports in the video below.
Finance management has taken precedence in the new global scenario. The increasing number of students and professionals who are opting for an accredited management program is adequate proof of this reality. Employers too prefer to employ people who have the requisite degree or diploma. Keeping this in mind, we, at Globsyn, have decided to embark on a special Finance program in order to give students and young professionals an optimal fillip when it comes to their careers. Additionally, we are collaborating with one of the top 50 business schools in the US with active participation of its faculty, to make our program more relevant to contemporary corporate expectations, while giving it an extra sheen. This is indeed a Finance program with a difference.
